The Art of Lawrence Supino

"Time is everything, five minutes makes the difference between victory and defeat"

Placeholder Picture

I painted this for a lover of history businessman who purchased a pocket watch at a Sotheby's auction which belonged to Vice Admiral Nelson when he was alive. It took me 8 months to complete.
The painting is about Vice Admiral Nelson of The British Royal Navy and The Battle of Trafalgar in 1805 in which he lost his life. The Battle of Trafalgar is one of the most famous in Britain's history, for it's when they defeated Napoleon, the French and Spanish fleets and saved Britain from being conquered.

The painting reflects an actual meeting which Nelson had with his Captains and Admirals the day before the battle to go over the battle plan and synchronize their watches.
I placed the meeting in Nelson's cabin aboard The HMS Victory. The HMS Victory is the same ship that went to battle. It is fully refurbished to its original condition and is the only war ship of that era still in existence and commission today. It is dry docked in Portsmouth England, where I went to take reference photos and research uniforms of that time for historical accuracy.

There were 29 Captains altogether but I could only find 8 portraits of the original men. The other figures in the painting are my client, his son, friends and me (on far right).  The title of this painting is an actual quote said by Admiral Nelson.
